Step-by-Step Guide to WEEE Registration

On 25 , Apr 2025 | In | By Alisa Maier

To ensure your company complies with all legal requirements under the German Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG), proper registration with the Stiftung Elektro-Altgeräte Register (stiftung ear) is essential.

WEEE registration is mandatory for all businesses that place electrical and electronic equipment on the German market for the first time – this applies to both B2B and B2C products. That means devices intended for use in private households as well as equipment used exclusively in non-household environments.

For more details on who is required to register, and which exceptions apply, please refer to our previous blog post: "WEEE Registration Requirement: What Companies Need to Know".

Key Steps at a Glance:

  1. Where does registration take place?

The stiftung ear is the national authority appointed by the German Environment Agency to handle manufacturer registrations.

  1. What documents are required?

To complete the registration successfully, the following documents must be submitted:

  • Company information (name, address, contact details)
  • Contact details of a legally authorised representative (e.g. managing director)
  • Tax ID and commercial register number
  • List of brands and product types placed on the market
  1. What are the special requirements for WEEE registration in Germany?

For B2C devices, a financial guarantee (insolvency guarantee) must be provided.
Manufacturers without a registered office in Germany must appoint an Authorised Representative.

  1. How often must information be updated?

Any changes – such as new brands, product types, or company details – must be reported immediately.
In addition, companies are required to report quantities placed on the market:

  • Monthly for B2C devices
  • Annually for both B2B and B2C devices
  1. How long does registration take?

Processing time depends on the completeness of your documents. In general, stiftung ear requires 4 to 12 weeks to finalise the registration.

  1. What costs are involved?

Both registration and annual reporting are subject to fees. The costs vary depending on the number of device types, brands, and the quantities placed on the market.

Why is professional support worthwhile?

The requirements of the ElektroG are complex. Incomplete or incorrect information can lead to delays or legal consequences. According to §45 of the ElektroG, placing electronic equipment on the German market without proper registration could result in fines of up to €100,000.
