UK: Obligations for distributors of electrical and electronic equipment

On 21 , Jan 2022 | In | By Gisa Scheschonka

Over and above their obligations as producers, companies selling electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) to private end customers in the UK may be confronted with additional obligations for take-back of WEEE in their power as distributors.

In general, distributors have to offer their end customers a free-of-charge option for the return of WEEE. The UK authorities have recently informed the industry that certain groups of distributors have the option to participate in the Distributor Take-Back Scheme (DTS) for the period 2022 to 2023, as was the case in previous years.

This applies to:
• Local distributors who have an EEE turnover of less than £100,000 or
• Distributors who only sell online

Businesses that sell £100,000 or more worth of EEE each year and have retail stores cannot participate in the DTS. They will need to create their own take-back scheme.

1cc can assist you verify your obligations as a distributor of WEEE in the UK and complete your registration with DTS, or help you develop and implement your own take-back solution.
