Is your schedule for the implementation of regulatory requirements in France up-to-date? You may find some useful information to reduce your potential compliance gap below.
Consumer Information
The obligation to provide information on environmental qualities and characteristics of waste generating products towards consumers is not new; however, it has reached a new stage of implementation since the beginning of this year.
As of 1 January 2025, companies with a turnover of at least 10 million Euro and place 10,000 sales units or more on the French market are concerned. The product scope has not evolved and still includes the products subject to extended producer responsibility in France such as packaging, printed papers, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, toys, furniture, textiles, etc.
Materials/Substances Ban in Packaging
While the ban on using mineral oils in printed matter has become effective as of 1 January 2025, others prohibitions have been postponed. This includes, for instance, the ban on packaging made of non-recyclable styrenic polymers or co-polymers. This objective has been postponed until 2030 to consider the requirements set out by the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation of the European Union.
EPR for Industrial Packaging
Extended producer responsibility for industrial and commercial packaging has officially been in place in France since 1 January 2025. There are still some open action items that need to be finalized by the French legislator: accreditation of producer responsibility organizations, targets and requirements for this new waste stream, etc. However, economic operators do not have to submit their declarations for the industrial and commercial packaging placed on the market during the year 2025 before January 2026. Producers can start preparing for the new reporting period already by gathering the required details and organizing your data.
