The Jordanian Ministry of Environment published the Instructions to implement the national framework for extended producer responsibility (EPR) for the handling of waste packaging for the year 2023 on 16 August 2022 in the Jordanian official gazette no. 5810.

According to the law that entered into force on the date of publication, producers and importers of packaged products placed on the market in Jordan are expected, amongst other requirements, to register with the Ministry of Environment and submit annual reports of the types and quantities of packaging placed on the market, as well as declare the quality of the packaging used.

The law, which is expected to be implemented in four phases will be overseen by the waste management department that is yet to be established by the Ministry of Environment. Amongst the responsibilities of the department is the approval of the instruments for the implementation of EPR, definition of the costs for the packaging waste-management system and the installation of the registration system for local and international entities placing packaged products on the local market.

Following the publication of an EPR-framework on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) early 2021, this law is the second in a series of regulatory initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Environment in Jordan.
