The implementation of the Plastic Tax in Italy is postponed yet again. The initial plan was to introduce it on 1 January 2021. However, the date was repeatedly postponed, the last of which was set for 1 January 2024. According to the most recent plans announced by the Council of the Ministers, the new deadline will be 1 July 2024.
The objective of the plastic tax in Italy is to reduce the production and consumption of single-use plastic articles and single-use plastic packaging. It is rooted in to one of the commitments of the EU Green Deal, namely the promotion of circular economy through incentives for sustainable products and compensation measures for environmentally harmful disposable products.
