The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) updated the REACH Candidate List on 23 January 2024. Five Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) were added to the list due to their hazardous properties.

The Candidate List of SVHC for substances that may require authorization in the future, now contains 240 entries (some are groups of chemicals and the overall number is currently 486 substances and substances groups) that may cause harm to human health or the environment.

Amongst other requirements, companies are required, according to REACH article 33, to fulfil their legal obligations by communicating the presence of those substances in articles above a concentration of 0.1 % (weight by weight) within the supply chain and ensuring the safe use of the chemicals concerned. Since 5 January 2021, the information must also be provided via ECHA's SCIP database.
