The EU Parliament has passed a new law requiring portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras, tablets, headphones or portable speakers to be sold in the EU with a USB Type-C connector by the end of 2024. This includes all devices that have a power of up to 100 watts. For laptops, the new regulation applies end of 2026.

Not only will the parliament’s decision reap benefits to the environment by reducing e-waste drastically, but it will also help consumers by eliminating the excessive need to acquire different chargers for different devices. The compatible charger offers users the flexibility to decide for a manufacturer’s brand, as well as whether the purchase of an additional charger is needed.

The proposal for a directive of the Council and the European Parliament on amending Directive 2014/53/EU on the harmonization of the laws of the member states relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment was published on 30th June 2022.
