Portugal ranks among the lowest in the EU when it comes to collecting electronic waste. The country falls far short of meeting the EU-mandated annual collection rate of 65 percent relative to the electrical and electronic equipment placed on the market in the previous three years.
The government is therefore currently considering how to create more incentives for consumers to stop hoarding old appliances at home and instead take them to public collection points. A corresponding law has now created the legal framework for this. By 31 December 2026, incentives or a deposit system, which have not yet been defined in detail, are to be introduced to increase the collection rate. The details will be regulated by a ministerial decree that is yet to be issued.
