France Continues the Implementation of PFAS Ban

Written by Tatjana Möllmann | Sep 25, 2025 7:16:20 AM

At the beginning of the year, France passed a law banning per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in various consumer products. The ban will be introduced in stages and will apply to PFAS in cosmetics, ski waxes, clothing textiles, and shoes from 1 January 2026. From 1 January 2030, a ban on all textile products containing PFAS will follow, with only a few exceptions.

In August, a draft implementation of the above ban was published, specifying the following areas:

  • Definitions
  • Threshold values
  • Exceptions

France has thus taken on a pioneering role in Europe in this area. However, France is not the only EU member state to introduce such measures and preempt planned EU measures. Other countries, such as Denmark and Belgium, are following France's example. While Denmark published an executive order to ban PFAS in mid-May, similar measures in Belgium are still in the draft stage.
