From 20 June 2025, smartphones and tablets sold in the EU must bear a new EU energy label. This label provides information on the energy efficiency, battery life, robustness, and reparability of the device. This measure is intended to help consumers make better and more sustainable purchasing decisions.

In France, a repair index has been in place for several categories of electrical appliances since 2021: smartphones, laptops, lawnmowers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, and high-pressure cleaners. The EU energy label will now replace the French repair index for new smartphones placed on the market from 20 June 2025.

Since the start of 2025, the repair index has been gradually replaced by the sustainability index in France:

• from 8 January for televisions
• from 8 April for washing machines.
