In reverse logistics, the flow of goods moves in the opposite direction: a product is returned from the end customer to the company, retailer or service partner.

Recycling or proper disposal
The aim is therefore not simply to transport a product back. Rather, the return must be managed in a controlled manner, and a decision must then be made as to how the product will be reused or processed.

How does reverse logistics work?
The first step is to organise the return. Depending on the product and process, this may involve, for example, a collection from the end customer, using a designated self-drop-off point, or arranging for the return to be sent via a parcel service.
Once the product has been returned, a crucial part of the process begins. Upon receipt, the product is recorded and inspected. This involves addressing questions such as:
Is the product complete?
Are the necessary accessories included?
What condition is the product in?
Is it still in working order?
What should be done with it next?
Depending on the outcome, the product can be returned directly to stock, cleaned and reconditioned, repaired, used as a source of spare parts, or recycled or disposed of. If it can still be used, it can then be cleared for its next use.
Why is reverse logistics more complex?
One of the biggest differences compared to traditional logistics is the lower level of predictability. The timing and volume of returns can vary. At the same time, when a product is returned, it is often not yet known what condition it is in or whether all accessories and components are present.
Added to this is coordination with the end customer, for example when a collection needs to be organised. Product, order and status data must also be clearly matched so that every returned product can be processed correctly.
Requirements can also vary: different clients require different inspection and processing rules. Furthermore, returns processes may differ depending on the country, product type or transport provider.
Whilst traditional logistics is therefore heavily focused on dispatch and delivery, reverse logistics centres on returns, inspection and deciding on the product’s future use.
The key difference can be summarised simply: whilst traditional logistics often ends with successful delivery, a new process begins in reverse logistics.
