On 6 November 2025, the ESSA General Assembly will take place – the most important European event for the security and value container industry. Experts from all over the world will gather to discuss current developments and future trends – from battery storage to the lifespan assessment of modern safes.
A key topic this year is the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Coming into effect gradually from 2025, this regulation marks a major milestone toward a unified and sustainable packaging policy across Europe.
The PPWR replaces the existing Packaging Directive and introduces binding rules for all packaging placed on the EU market. Its objectives are clear: to significantly reduce packaging waste, increase recycling rates, and promote the use of environmentally friendly materials. Importantly, the regulation creates harmonized standards for all Member States, ensuring transparency and comparability across the entire supply chain.
For businesses, the PPWR brings both challenges and opportunities. Manufacturers and importers will be required to meet strict criteria regarding design, reusability, and recyclability of their packaging. At the same time, the regulation opens doors for innovation, sustainable product design, and responsible circular economy practices – themes that are also central to this year’s ESSA discussions.
